What are PBP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a PBP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your PBP files.

What is a PBP file?

PBP files have multiple uses, and Sony PlayStation Portable Firmware is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Sony PlayStation Portable Firmware

These files contain updates for the PSP device's firmware. The .pbp file extension may also be used for files that install different games onto the PSP device.

In some cases, a person will want to modify, "jailbreak", or "hack" the firmware of the gaming device itself. In instances such as these, the file used to accomplish this task may also be saved with the .pbp file suffix.

How to open PBP files

Important: Different programs may use files with the PBP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your PBP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different PBP openers which you will find listed below.

PowerBASIC Project

PowerBASIC Project format (".PBP") is a file used by the PowerBASIC Integrated Development Environment to group together all the source files and related metadata for a particular program under development. It enables saving and restoring the state of a project: which source files are part of it, where they are located, which one is "primary," plus any layout state in the editor.

PowerBASIC creates .PBP files using its IDE via the "Save Project …" command after you open all the source files you intend to use. Later, using "Open Project …" will cause the IDE to load every source file listed inside the project file. The .PBP file is stored in a binary form that the IDE reads to restore its project session.

Internally, .PBP files contain full pathnames of all source code files in the project along with settings such as which file is primary. The file begins with a sequence of zero bytes at offset zero, and has a repeat of space characters (ASCII 0x20) starting at offset 50. These characteristic byte signatures help distinguish the file from other formats using the same extension.
