NWD File

What are NWD files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a NWD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your NWD files.

What is a NWD file?

A .NWD file is a NavisWorks Document file.

The NavisWorks Document format with extension .NWD is a file format created by Autodesk Navisworks. It is used to publish and distribute a complete, self-contained snapshot of a 3D project model. These files embed all the geometry from source files together with review data such as viewpoints, animations, comments, redlines, and clash-detection results. The format is intended for sharing so that recipients do not need the original CAD or model files to view and interact with the model.

Navisworks writes .NWD files by exporting or publishing from a working model file (often an NWF) or by saving "as" .NWD. Once published, .NWD is used for presentation, review, collaboration, or archival. Users viewing .NWD files can use Navisworks Freedom (the free viewer) or any full Navisworks product in read-only mode. Because .NWD packages everything internally, updates to source CAD files do not affect an already-published .NWD file.

NWD files compress model geometry and related data, often reducing size by up to about 80 percent compared to original CAD files. They support optional protection features such as password protection or expiration dates when published.

As a technical identifier, .NWD files begin with an ASCII header signature "#LcUStream-V1.1 binary …" at the very start (offset zero) of the file.
