What are NCMM2 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a NCMM2 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your NCMM2 files.

What is a NCMM2 file?

A .NCMM2 file is a NI MASCHINE MIKRO MK2 Template file.

The NI MASCHINE MIKRO MK2 Template file type stores mappings and settings for a Native Instruments MASCHINE MIKRO MK2 hardware controller. It defines how the controller's physical controls (pads, buttons, knobs, wheels, etc.) are assigned to MIDI messages, what pages the controller has, colors and behaviors of pad LEDs, which page was last selected, and various control states. These Template files are used within NI's Controller Editor to customize how the controller behaves in different workflows.

These files are created and edited using the Native Instruments Controller Editor software. The user can export a Template as a file to their computer (with the extension .ncmm2 for MASCHINE MIKRO MK2), load or switch Templates in the editor, and share or back them up. When a Template is applied (on the controller itself or via Controller Editor), it updates all control element assignments, page layouts, velocity curves, LED/color behavior, and MIDI port settings for that controller.

The Template file extension .ncmm2 is specific to MASCHINE MIKRO MK2 controllers as defined by Native Instruments. Its internal structure is XML encoded in UTF-8. A valid .ncmm2 file begins with an XML declaration (<xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no">) and includes tags and fields such as NI-CONTROLLER-MIDI-MAP, BEHAVIOR ONIFDOWN, GROUP COLOR-INDEX, MIDI-MAP NAME, DISPLAY TYPE, PAD MODE, PAGE NAME, etc.
