What are NCC files and how to open them

What is a NCC file?

NCC files have multiple uses, and NI Controller Configuration is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

NI Controller Configuration

NI Controller Configuration files are used by Native Instruments' Controller Editor to save complete mappings and settings for NI hardware controllers. They hold all the custom templates, pages, and control assignments (knobs, buttons, pads etc.), and also include which template is actively selected for the controller. These files let users load a full controller setup - how their hardware behaves, which controls send what MIDI messages - in one go.

The .ncc files are produced and used by the Controller Editor application from Native Instruments. After configuring multiple templates or pages, assignments, MIDI mappings etc., users save their working configuration to disk in a .ncc file. When the NI controller or NI's background service starts up, it loads the .ncc file so that the hardware follows the stored control mapping setup.

In technical detail, .ncc files are XML‐text files beginning with an XML header ("<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>") followed by a root element <ni-controller-midi-map version="...">. They contain settings grouped into templates and pages, using XML tags like midi-map, template, and control types (e.g. knobs, buttons) that name things like CONTROLLER TYPE, MIDI LEARN, CURRENT TEMPLATE INDEX, etc.
