What are NAR files and how to open them

What is a NAR file?

NAR files have multiple uses, and Nokia Archive is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Nokia Archive

Nokia developed the NAR file format for their mobile phone handsets. These NAR files are generated by a supported Nokia device to store one or more digital photos produced by the cameras that are embedded in these Nokia mobile phones. A .nar file also contains metadata details in XML format.

These NAR files are usually found in Nokia Lumia mobile phone handsets. This is why these image files are also known as Nokia Lumia Smart Cam files. This file format is a compressed archive that contains digital images and XML metadata details. Nokia Lumia's built-in camera can quickly take up to 10 snapshots and store these in a NAR file. Metadata details in XML format are also generated and stored by Nokia Lumia's Smart Cam software in the .nar file. To open files with the .nar extension, it is best to use Nokia Lumia's embedded Smart Cam software.

How to open NAR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the NAR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your NAR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

Ukagaka Ghost

We know that one NAR format is Ukagaka Ghost. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
