Interplay MVE Video
Interplay MVE Video files store full-motion video and synchronized audio used by Interplay Entertainment in PC games. They embed cutscenes, intros, or interlevel cinematic sequences. These files are produced by the game engine and played back during gameplay; users typically do not create or edit them directly.
The video uses a custom codec designed for displaying animated, palette-based frames at modest resolution and with audio encoded either as PCM or Interplay's own delta/companded scheme. Game developers encode the video and audio together, interleaving them in segments so that audio frames follow video frames closely, helping ensure lip-sync and smooth playback when rendered by the game's playback engine.
Files begin with the ASCII signature InterplayMVEFile (followed by bytes 1A 00), which identifies the format. After that comes a header containing version or magic numbers (in many files seen as three 16-bit words 0x001A, 0x0100, 0x1133), then a series of chunks. Each chunk has a length, a type, and contains one or more opcodes. Opcodes themselves include a length count, a type byte, a version byte, and data depending on the opcode type such as video frame data or audio content.
