What are MPLS files and how to open them

What is a MPLS file?

A .MPLS file is a Blu-ray Movie Playlist Information file.

Blu-ray Movie Playlist Information files (.MPLS) are small binary playlist files used by Blu-ray discs. They are created when a disc is authored (by the Blu-ray Disc Association's specification) and placed in the BDMV/PLAYLIST directory. Their job is to describe how video clips (the .m2ts stream files) are arranged into a feature or title: which clips to play, in what order, where chapters begin and end, and what parts are included in the main movie or bonus content. They do not contain actual audio or video, only navigation and sequence information.

When you insert a Blu-ray or use a ripped Blu-ray folder/tree, the player software reads one of these .mpls files (often the longest one by playback time) to know how to stitch together all the necessary clip files (.m2ts) and chapter marks into the full video playback experience. Authoring tools and disc-ripping utilities also read .mpls files to identify the main title or extract chapter data. The .mpls name is conventionally a five-digit zero-padded number (such as 00000.mpls, 00001.mpls, etc.).

On a technical level each .mpls file begins with an 8-byte ASCII header: the tag "MPLS" followed by a version string (such as "0200", commonly used on standard Blu-ray, or "0300" on some Ultra HD discs). The file uses big-endian byte order for its internal multi-byte integers. Key internal structures include a PlayList table (listing PlayItems that reference .m2ts clips with specific start (IN) and end (OUT) timestamps), a PlayListMark table for chapter marks, and sometimes an ExtensionData block. One of the signatures is the ASCII sequence "MPLS0200..." starting at byte offset 0; another known signature is "M2TS" found within the file, locating the referenced clip streams.
