While MacWrite Document is a popular type of MCW-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .MCW file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

MPLAB IDE Workspace
MPLAB IDE Workspace files, with the .mcw extension, are used by the MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE) from Microchip Technology to store the state of your IDE setup - called a workspace. These are not source code or project build files. Instead they save information such as which device and debugger/programmer tools are selected, how the IDE windows are laid out on your screen, which editor files are open, the configuration bits settings for the target microcontroller, and other environment settings.
MPLAB IDE writes .mcw files whenever you explicitly save a workspace (for example, via File → Save Workspace). When that file is loaded (either manually or automatically in subsequent MPLAB sessions), IDE restores the UI layout and configuration choices saved in it. Project files (.mcp) carry build and source associations, but workspace files (.mcw) only carry IDE-state, not build state or object content.
Inside a .mcw file there are binary signatures based on Microsoft's Compound File format. Among its recognizable contents are the Compound File header (bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00 at offset 0) and internal identifiers or keywords such as COMPONENTMANAGER, LOADEDDISPLAYS, PROJECTDISPLAY, CONFIGMEMORY, BREAKPOINTS, PROJECTMGR, ROOT ENTRY, OPENFILES, DEBUGGER, ZORDER, MCP, OUTPUT, PIC.
