What are LXF files and how to open them

What is a LXF file?

LXF files have multiple uses, and LEGO Exchange Format is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

LEGO Exchange Format

These files contain LEGO 3D models designed using LEGO Digital Designer. LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) is a computer application that works like CAD software.

Produced by the LEGO Group as part of LEGO Design byME, the LDD allows users to build models using virtual LEGO bricks in a way that is very similar to CAD programs. It is available for Mac and Windows platforms.

The .lxf file contains a 3D model created using the LEGO Digital Designer. The .lxf file is saved using the .ZIP compression format, and within each LXF file, there are three files, namely:

• MODEL100.MODEL is a binary .lxf scene file that describes the environment setting of the model.
• IMAGE100.PNG, the model's thumbnail images, that keep the project from lagging when loading.
• IMAGE100.LXFML- an XML formatted document that describes the location of the bricks.
