Opening LXF files

Did your computer fail to open a LXF file? We explain what LXF files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your LXF files.

What is a LXF file?

The .lxf file format is a file extension found in files that are frequently associated with LEGO Digital Designer. LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) is a computer application that works like a CAD software. Produced by the LEGO Group as part of LEGO Design byME, the LDD allows users to build models using virtual LEGO bricks in a way that is very similar to CAD programs. It is available for Mac and Windows platforms.

The .lxf file contains a 3D model created by using the LEGO Digital Designer. The .lxf file is saved using the .ZIP compression format and within each .LXF file, there are three files, namely: MODEL100.MODEL which is a binary .lxf scene file that describe the the environment setting of the model, IMAGE100.PNG, the thumbnail images of the model- that keeps the project from lagging when loading and IMAGE100.LXFML- an XML formatted documents which describes the location of the bricks.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
