What are LRV files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a LRV file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.

What is a LRV file?

The LRV file format was created by GoPro as a digital video file format for their line of HD cameras. The LRV in the .lrv file extension stands for low resolution videos. The software in a supported GoPro digital HD camera generates LRV files when saving video clips that have been taken using this camera. The .lrv file format uses MPEG-4 video encoding specifications. Certain GoPro HD cameras that use this file format include HERO2 and HERO3. This file format reduces the consumption of computing resources by the GoPro digital camera, which speeds up the recording and editing process. After recording and editing the videos in the GoPro camera, these .lrv files can be replaced by the HD video files, which have also been stored by the GoPro HD camera.GoPro mobile applications can be used to open and view the videos that are stored in these LRV files. It is also possible to open and view LRV files by using standard MP4 players and other video playback programs with support for the .mp4 format. This can be done by simply changing the file extension of these LRV files from .lrv to .mp4.
