What are LPI files and how to open them

What is a LPI file?

LPI files have multiple uses, and Lazarus Project Information is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Lazarus Project Information

Lazarus Project Information (.lpi) files contain all the metadata and settings that define how a Lazarus IDE project is built and run. When you create a project in Lazarus (a Free Pascal based RAD IDE), the tool writes a .lpi file into the project folder to record things like which source files are included, what compiler options to use, what build modes are defined, and where published files should be placed. This allows Lazarus to reopen the project later with the same configuration.

The .lpi format is XML-text, readable in any text editor, and edited mainly through Lazarus' Project Inspector and other project dialogs. When you open or save a project, Lazarus reads or writes the .lpi file. All project-specific options (project-wide, build-modes, debugging, compiler/linker paths, run parameters) are stored here. The IDE uses this file to decide which units (pascal source files) belong to the project, which unit is the main one, resource files, and so on.

The internal identifier includes an XML header at the very start, typically beginning with "<?xml version="1.0" … followed by a root CONFIG element. Within that, sections like ProjectOptions, Units, CompilerOptions etc. appear. Each unit included in the project is listed with subfields like Filename, IsPartOfProject, UnitName, and optional resource flags.
