What are LNK files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a LNK file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.
What is a LNK file?
A .LNK file is a Windows Shortcut file.
Files given the .lnk extension are commonly referred to as "link files" or desktop shortcuts. These files are most commonly associated with Microsoft Windows, and they typically point to a .exe file located somewhere else on the user's computer. When you click a .lnk file shortcut, it launches the program associated with the .exe file that the shortcut refers to.
The .lnk files will appear on your desktop as an icon with a small, curved arrow. These files can be handy when you want quick access to an application you frequently use. For example, instead of navigating to the program from your start menu, you can click the .lnk file on your desktop, and the application will launch for you automatically.
How to open LNK files
Important: Different programs may use files with the LNK file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your LNK file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
