What is a JTX file?

A .JTX file is a Microsoft Exchange Extensible Storage Engine Log file.

Microsoft Exchange Extensible Storage Engine writes transaction log files to record all database operations so that in case of a crash or unexpected shutdown the system can restore consistency. These log files (.JTX) store every transaction before it is committed to the main database so nothing is lost. They play a crucial role for both normal exchange of data and recovery scenarios such as soft or hard recovery. Known to be created by Microsoft Exchange Server.

The naming and behavior of .JTX transaction log files depend on certain engine settings. For database instances using the default modern file naming, log files are named with a three-letter base name (set by a parameter) followed by a generation number and the extension .jtx. If the compatibility setting for legacy names (JET_bitESE98FileNames in the parameter JET_paramLegacyFileNames) is used, log files instead use the older .log extension. Each .jtx file has fixed size (configurable), and when the current log file fills up, the system switches to a new one in sequence. Granular control over how many are kept, and when they are deleted, is possible via log and backup configuration.

Opening .JTX files directly is not useful; these are binary files not meant to be read or edited by users. Their content includes internal signatures that tie them to a specific database instance - these must match the database when replaying logs during recovery. A utility provided with Exchange (eseutil) can inspect log files' header information using a dump command to verify generation, signature, and consistency.
