What is a HPT file?

HPT files have multiple uses, and HotDocs PDF Template is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

HotDocs PDF Template File

HotDocs PDF Template Files are used by the HotDocs document‐automation program to define fillable forms based on a fixed PDF layout. These templates combine a "background" PDF page (for example a form or letterhead) with interactive fields and logic so that user responses during an interview are later overlaid onto the PDF and assembled into a completed document.

To create one, you design the static portion of a form as a standard PDF (often via printing from another application using HotDocs' PDF driver) then use HotDocs Developer (including its Automator) to add variable fields, conditional logic, and reference data stored in a component file. When assembled with user input, this template produces a HotDocs PDF Document (.HPD) that can be viewed, printed, or further edited.

Technically, the .HPT format is PDF‐based: the static layer is a standard PDF file, and HotDocs adds tags or "overlay" information for the dynamic parts of the template. It is one of several template types supported by HotDocs, alongside Envoy-based form templates (.HFT) and text templates (Word, RTF, etc.).
