HKI File

What are HKI files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a HKI file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your HKI files.

What is a HKI file?

A .HKI file is a WinHki Compressed Archive file.

WinHki Compressed Archive files (.hki) are archive containers produced by the WinHKI compression utility developed by Hanspeter Imp. These files pack one or more files and directories into a single, compressed archive. The tool was designed for Windows platforms (versions including 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7) to reduce disk space, speed up uploads and sharing, and optionally secure contents using encryption.

WinHKI supports creating .hki archives using its proprietary HKI format (often alongside variants like HKI1, HKI2, HKI3), with adjustable compression levels to balance speed and file size. WinHKI can also span large archives into smaller parts and create self-extracting archives. When you need the contents, the same program (or one of its associated unpacker tools) decompresses the .hki file back into the original files and folders.

Internally, these files can be identified by a specific byte signature. The archive begins with the sequence 61 5C 04 05 14 41 00 00 FD 00 at offset zero.
