What are HEX files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a HEX file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.

What is a HEX file?

Files that contain the .hex file extension are used for hexadecimal source files. These files contain settings and configuration information that has been saved in the hexadecimal file format. Files that are saved in the HEX file format can be stored in text or binary format.

The Magellan GPS Receiver also uses the .hex file suffix. These HEX files are used to store flash ROM upgrade files for the GPS device.

The .hex file suffix is also used for the Pioneer CDJ-800MK2 professional DJ turntable. These HEX files contain the update files that are used to update the turntable's firmware.

How to open HEX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the HEX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your HEX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
