What are HDS files and how to open them

What is a HDS file?
HDS files have multiple uses, and Microsoft PlayReady Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Microsoft PlayReady Data File
Files that contain the .hds file extension are most commonly associated with Windows Media Digital Rights Management files. Windows Media Digital Rights Management is a platform that allows for the protection and secure transmission of a user's media files.
The DRM files allow for the protected content to be played on computers and portable devices without compromising security.
How to open HDS files
Important: Different programs may use files with the HDS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your HDS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested four different HDS openers which you will find listed below.

While Microsoft PlayReady Data File is a popular type of HDS-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .HDS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
X68000 SCSI Hard Disk Image
We know that one HDS format is X68000 SCSI Hard Disk Image. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
