HAL File

What are HAL files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a HAL file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your HAL files.

What is a HAL file?

A .HAL file is a HotDocs Answer Library file.

HotDocs Answer Library files (extension ".HAL") are used by HotDocs to organise and manage collections of answer files. In document automation workflows, one "answer file" stores responses to interviews (the questions you fill in for a template), and a HAL-formatted answer library provides a catalogue or library of those saved answer files for easier access, sorting, viewing and history tracking.

The HAL file is created and maintained by the HotDocs program through its Answer File Manager feature. It doesn't contain the actual content of each answer file, but holds references to existing answer files (typically with the .ANX or .ANS extension), along with metadata such as title, description, file path and usage history. Users interact with .HAL via HotDocs to add answer files to the library, view answer file contents summaries, sort or search them, and see when and with what template each was used. If a library's item has foreign characters in its properties, HotDocs may convert the HAL binary library into an XML-based format (using the .HDL extension) to ensure full character support.

Technically, the .HAL file is a binary-format answer library - a collection of references and metadata in a proprietary binary structure used by HotDocs versions up to and including HotDocs 2008. When created under those versions, storing non-ASCII characters in metadata (titles, descriptions) is limited; exceeding those limits triggers either conversion to XML library format or loss/replacement of those characters. HotDocs 2009 and later supports XML-based library files (.HDL) alongside HAL.
