GCF File

What are GCF files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a GCF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your GCF files.

What is a GCF file?

GCF files have multiple uses, and Game Cache is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Game Cache File

GCF is an acronym for Game Cache File. Files that contain the .gcf file extension normally store game data such as file fragments, checksums, metadata, and other game information and game details that are used by an associated gaming application.

These files store game data downloaded from the Valve Steam distribution service. GCF files may also contain game updates for computer games that have been distributed by Valve Stream. This ensures that the user has the most recent version of the game installed on their hard drive.

How to open GCF files

All known file formats using extension .GCF

While Game Cache File is a popular type of GCF-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .GCF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Graphing Calculator Data File

Graphing Calculator Data File (extension .GCF) is a proprietary document format created by the Graphing Calculator application from Pacific Tech. These files are used to store a user's mathematical work - such as equations, functions, variables, and visualizations like 2-D or 3-D plots - so that work in progress can be saved and later reloaded into the same program. They are not generic data files; they retain the symbolic definitions (including implicit, parametric, piecewise, and complex functions) and the complete state of graphs or surfaces as previously set up in the software.

Created and written by Graphing Calculator, .GCF files serve as project or document files: after entering equations, choosing coordinate systems, defining variables (including sliders or complex constants), setting up viewing windows, choosing functions, vector fields, contour plots, density maps, or deciding between coordinate systems, the user saves everything in a .GCF file. On re-opening, the saved symbolic work, its display settings, and any annotations or formatting restore exactly - all without needing external data sources.

The first 20 bytes of a .GCF file contain an ASCII signature: starting at offset 0 the string "GraphingCalculator" in ASCII, followed by a period character at offset 20. This signature identifies the file as belonging to this specific Graphing Calculator format.

We have identified one GCF opener that is compatible with this specific type of GCF file.

Greeting Card Creator Project

Greeting Card Creator Project (.GCF) is a project file used by the ArcSoft Greeting Card Creator application. It saves all elements of a greeting card you are working on - layout, backgrounds, text, clipart, and graphics - so you can close the program and return later to continue editing the card.

This file is created when you use ArcSoft Greeting Card Creator (sometimes called ArcSoft Greeting Card Creator Project) to design greeting cards on Windows. When you click Save (not Export), the design is stored inside a .GCF file so that edits are preserved. To produce a printable or shareable image (for example a JPG), the program exports or renders the project into a standard image format; the .GCF remains as the editable source.

GCF files from Greeting Card Creator begin with a specific binary signature sequence starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00 at offset 0. That signature matches the standard Compound File format used in certain Microsoft file types. Additional ASCII markers in the file identify "Root Entry" and the string "ArcSoft GreetingCardCreatorProjectFile2.0" at fixed offsets within the file.

WindowsXCompressor Archive File

We know that one GCF format is WindowsXCompressor Archive File. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested seven different GCF openers which you will find listed below.
