What is a FX file?

DirectX Effects File
Files that contain the .fx file extension are most commonly associated with the Microsoft DirectX application programming interfaces. The FX files related to this software are effects files created for the Direct3D component of Microsoft DirectX technology.
These files contain the plain text effects and properties for the associated file and are used to specify the textures, shading, rendering, lighting and other 3D effects.
