What is a FTF file?
The .ftf file extension is created and used by Sony Ericsson as one of their proprietary file formats. The .ftf file represents the firmware and updates made for Xperia devices developed by Sony, although there are also some Android developers who use .ftf firmware files to store their updates.
FTF files usually come in compressed forms such as .zip or .rar, which can only be used after decompressing or extracting the files. The use of a special Flash Tool that caters to Sony preferences is necessary for the flash firmware in Xperia devices.
The FTF file is commonly utilized for older versions of Xperia series. Today, latest versions of Xperia smartphones use .elf files. And though, .ftf files work fairly similar to .elf files, .ftf are more versatile in flash tools compared to the latter.
