FMZ File

What are FMZ files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a FMZ file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your FMZ files.

What is a FMZ file?

A .FMZ file is a Form*Z Project file.

A Form*Z Project file is the native project file used by the form-Z application from AutoDesSys. It stores everything for a 3D design project: the geometry of all solids and surfaces, materials, lighting setups, scene layout, render and animation settings. Designers use .fmz files to save their full form-Z projects so they can open them later to edit, render, or animate.

The form-Z software both creates and reads .fmz project files. Users start a project, build up the model, add textures, lighting, cameras, perhaps animation, then save as an .fmz. When reopening that file in form-Z, all the settings are preserved. Templates in form-Z are themselves .fmz files, so users can save a preferred starting environment to reuse.

As for the file's internal structure, .fmz files are binary, beginning with specific byte signatures such as byte 0xFF at offset 0, 0xFF at offset 2, 0xFF17FF at offset 4, with later sections containing strings like "LAYER GROUP", "OBJECT", "COLOR", and "LIGHT GROUP" which help delineate the hierarchy of objects and their properties within the scene.
