What are FMP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a FMP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your FMP files.

What is a FMP file?

FMP files have multiple uses, and FileMaker Pro Database is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

FileMaker Pro Database

FMP is an acronym for FileMaker Pro. Files that contain the .fmp file extension hold database files that have been created with the FileMaker Pro database software application. FileMaker Pro can be used on both Windows and Mac operating systems.

The .fmp file extension is a generic FileMaker Pro extension, rather than the version-specific extensions that are also created by the software, such as the .fp4 (version 4) and .fp5 (version 5) FileMaker Pro file extensions. This file format allows users to distribute FileMaker Pro files to users who may be operating on a different version of the software than they are.

The Fractal Mapper Map File

The Fractal Mapper Map File (extension .FMP) is a project file created by the Fractal Mapper application from NBOS Software. It stores every component and setting that makes up a fantasy or overland map inside the software - such as terrain spans, symbols, objects, grid settings, map title, color defaults, scripts, and other metadata. If you have a .FMP file, it's likely your own saved map from Fractal Mapper, with everything you see in the tool preserved for future editing.

Files in this format are written by Fractal Mapper when you save a map project. The project file is intended for later reloading in the same program to continue editing - adding symbols, adjusting the grid, modifying script settings, etc. It is not meant as a finished image output; you export to PNG, BMP, JPG or EMF when you want a picture. Maps saved as .FMP are editable, meaning what you draw, create, or place stays editable until exported.

Technically the .FMP format is plain text, human-readable, and identifies itself with certain header lines. The beginning of the file contains the ASCII signature "[Begin]" followed by "Definition:" and the phrase "The Fractal Mapper Map File Format:" which uniquely identify it. Inside you'll find many keywords such as MAPTITLE, SYMBOL, GRIDTYPE, DEFAULTCOLOR and similar terms that define parts of the project.
