While FIGfont Control File is a popular type of FLC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .FLC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

FLIC FLC Video

FLIC FLC Video files are an old style of animation used primarily in the early 1990s by Autodesk's Animator and Animator Pro programs. These files store a sequence of bitmap frames (still images) that are played back in order to produce simple animations or graphical effects. They are well suited for short clips, game intros, demos, or any situation where you want animated graphics without the complexity or size of full motion video.

Files in this format are created by animation software such as Autodesk Animator Pro. The program takes series of frames - often images drawn or painted - and encodes them into a single .FLC file, compressing the data so it takes less disk space while allowing quick playback. The animations typically use 8-bit color (256 colors), and often rely on a shared color palette across frames. FLC files generally do not include audio tracks. Once stored, these files are read by a variety of players or converters that can display the animation on screen or export it to more modern formats.

The FLIC FLC Video format uses a characteristic byte signature for identification inside the file: a two-byte sequence 0x12AF located at offset 4. This helps software detect that a file is indeed a FLIC FLC Video rather than some other format with the same extension.
