What is an EOT file?
The .eot file extension or the Embedded Open Type extension is a font format extension used in Web pages as the basic font type for Web contents, especially contents that are search using the Internet Explorer browser. EOT was created primarily for the Internet Explorer web browser and might not be functional to others like Mozilla and Chrome.
Embedded Open Type extension is derived from the use of TrueType fonts and is embedded with Microsoft Web Embedding Fonts Tool that are commonly used in developing websites. EOT files are saved in a way that it should not be opened as is. Users can only utilize the file by going online or by editing web files.
But EOT files are no longer in the mainstream font files. Since EOT files were designed for Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer is replaced by a more popular browser, the use of .eot is also in decline and is being replaced by a more appropriate and updated font file. TTF, OTF and WOFF formats are now more commonly used. But if the user wishes, he can still use .eot files only for Internet Explorer 8 but now, with limited functionality.
