What is an EOT file?

EOT files have multiple uses, and Embedded OpenType Font is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Embedded OpenType Font

The .eot file extension or the Embedded Open Type extension is a font format extension used in web pages as a basic font type for web content. EOT was created primarily for the Internet Explorer web browser and is derived from the use of TrueType fonts.

EOT files are saved in a way that they should not be opened as is. EOT files are no longer in the mainstream font files. Since EOT files were designed for Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer has been replaced by a more popular browser, the use of .eot is also in decline. It is being replaced by more appropriate and updated font file formats like TTF, OTF, and WOFF.

Important: Different programs may use files with the EOT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your EOT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

ExamView Online Test

ExamView Online Test files (.EOT) store tests created with the ExamView Test Generator intended for delivery over a local area network (LAN). These files are used when instructors publish an online version of a test so that students can access it via the ExamView Test Player. They include the full test setup - questions, answer key, scoring rules, and other settings required to run and grade the test automatically. Programs in the ExamView Assessment Suite generate .EOT files when instructors choose the "publish as LAN/online test" option. Once created, the .EOT file is opened by ExamView Test Player on clients and by ExamView Test Manager to collect results and produce class reports.

When you publish a test this way, you build it using the Test Generator, then save it in the .EOT format. If you specify it's for online/LAN delivery, ExamView Test Generator writes the file and you must place it on a network location accessible to students. The Test Manager reads this .EOT to get the answer key, point values, and structure. If multimedia links are used in the test, those auxiliary files must be copied manually alongside the .EOT file. Results for objective questions are recorded automatically; open-response items require manual scoring.

A .EOT file begins with the ASCII byte sequence 1A 45 56 4F 4E 49 4E 45 (which spells .EVONLINE) at offset zero.
