What is a WOFF file?

A .WOFF file is a Web Open Font Format file.

The .WOFF, or Web Open Font Format files, are used to customize Web page fonts. WOFF files are commonly used by web developers nowadays, and WOFF is a very popular web font format that replaces the older types used in Internet Explorer in the past.

Technically, fonts in the .woff format support other font types like .otf (Open Type) and .ttf (True Type). The WOFF format offers superior compression of the raw font files, making the data size smaller, which is important when the fonts are used online, and "links" the OTF/TTF font files with metadata (information) about the font.

WOFF2 is the successor to the WOFF file format, offering 20% better compression.

How to open WOFF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the WOFF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your WOFF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
