What is an EAC3 file?

An .EAC3 file is a Raw E-AC-3 Audio file.

This file holds audio compressed using the Enhanced AC-3 codec (also called Dolby Digital Plus). It is an elementary stream of audio data without any enclosing container format. Such files store full or multichannel lossy audio intended for playback or processing by compatible decoders.

Typically created by encoding software or audio extraction tools that output raw E-AC-3 streams, these files are then decoded by media players or hardware audio decoders that support E-AC-3. They are not self-describing with metadata containers, so details like channel count, sample rate, or bit rate must be determined by the program decoding them rather than stored in the file.

A valid raw E-AC-3 file begins with a sync frame whose first two bytes are the hexadecimal value 0x0B77, identifying the start of an E-AC-3 sync frame.
