What is a DSS file?
The .dss file extension is used for an audio file format that was created by Olympus Corporation for one of their hardware products. Files in the DSS file format are also known as Olympus DSS voice files. These .dss files are generated by the built-in tools that are embedded in Olympus Digital Video Recorder devices.High compression methods are integrated into these DSS files. The "DSS" in the .dss file extension stands for Digital Speech Standard. The DSS file format is mainly used to transmit voice files as attachments in emails without affecting its overall audio playback quality. These .dss files can be opened and viewed using the Olympus DSS Player Lite software. Although much smaller than standard WAV files, these DSS files still possess high playback quality. On average, a DSS file is 12 to 20 times smaller than standard WAV voice files.
