DPL File

What are DPL files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a DPL file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your DPL files.

What is a DPL file?

DPL files have multiple uses, and Borland Component is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Borland Component

Borland Component (.DPL) files are package libraries used in Borland Delphi 3 to bundle Delphi components, compiled units, and other reusable code into a single, loadable module. These files enable developers to distribute functionality that can be shared between Delphi projects without including source code in every project.

These libraries are built by the Delphi 3 IDE or compiler from package source files (.DPK). When compiled, the .DPL file behaves like a Windows DLL augmented with Delphi-specific metadata - such as a dependency table of units, exported class and procedure symbols, and a special entry point named RegisterModule that allows the Delphi IDE and runtime to integrate the package at design time or run time. After Delphi 3, the .DPL format was replaced by the .BPL extension starting with Delphi 4, and current Delphi development no longer produces .DPL files.

Technically, a .DPL file uses the Windows Portable Executable (PE) format typical of DLLs, beginning with the ASCII signature "MZ" at offset 0. It includes sections such as CODE, DATA, BSS, .idata, .edata, .rdata, .reloc, and .rsrc, and embeds strings including "This program must be run under Win32" and various Delphi VCL/Ezel symbols.
