Many different programs use the .dat file extension. When you see a file on your computer with the .dat extension, all it really means is that the file contains some type of computer data. There is really no way to tell what type of data the file contains unless you open it. The problem is, unless you know where the file originated from, the data contained within the .dat file be hard to decipher.
