What are CSD files and how to open them

What is a CSD file?

Important: Different programs may use files with the CSD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CSD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .CSD

While Cabbage Script File is a popular type of CSD-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .CSD file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

CorelDRAW Character Set

We know that one CSD format is CorelDRAW Character Set. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Csound Unified Audio File Format

These files contain Csound orchestra and score files that have been combined into a single structured XML file.

Singer Embroidery Design File

Singer embroidery machines sold under the POEM, Huskygram, and Singer EU brands use Singer Embroidery Design Files (.CSD) as their native stitch-format for home embroidery systems. These files store detailed instructions for stitching designs - such as stitch types, jump stitches, trims, and thread color changes - and are produced by Singer or by software sold for Singer-compatible machines. Designers use .CSD files when creating or editing patterns intended to be sewn directly by these Singer/POEM/Huskygram machines.

A .CSD file is generated by embroidery digitizing or editing software (such as the Dream To Reality software for POEM machines) and contains sequenced stitch data. The user can import a bitmap or vector artwork into the software, digitize the design into stitches, then export or save as a .CSD file so it can be loaded into the embroidery machine. Some software supports multiple variants: for example, Singer machines have CSD Type I and Type II files, where Type II (introduced in CS 1.2B and used by Singer EU software) stores additional data such as thread color RGB values and an icon preview.

The format is binary and holds relative X/Y needle-movement records, color-change markers, jump or trim instructions, and stop commands for threading. It does not primarily contain full image data, but machine-readable stitch instructions. The format supports expanded "stitch file" data rather than wireframe placeholders when opened in professional embroidery tools.

Internally, CSD files begin with a fixed byte signature sequence at the start of the file. The signature bytes at offset zero are 7C 4B C3 74 E1 C8 53 A4 79 B9 01 1D FC 4F DD 13 86 3F 38 83 C3 6D 45 66 77.
