What are CRYPT files and how to open them

What is a CRYPT file?

CRYPT files have multiple uses, and Cryptx Encrypted Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Cryptx Encrypted Data File

Cryptx Encrypted Data File stores data that has been encrypted by the Cryptx software component developed by CSI Centro Studi Informatica Danilo Priore. It is used by software (such as VB6 applications or ASP pages) that employ Cryptx to protect strings or other data by encrypting them with a user-supplied password.

These files are created when the Cryptx component takes plaintext data (text, configuration, or similar) and applies both a hash algorithm and an encryption algorithm from Microsoft's CryptoAPI. The file is intended for later decryption by the same component using the correct password.

Cryptx allows choosing among several hash functions (MD2, MD4, MD5, SHA) and encryption algorithms (RC2, RC4, DES, 3DES) when creating these encrypted data files.

Technical identifier: files begin with the ASCII characters "CRYPTX" (hex bytes 43 52 59 50 54 58) at offset zero to mark them as Cryptx Encrypted Data File format.

How to open CRYPT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CRYPT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CRYPT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

These CRYPT files are generated by the WhatsApp software, an instant messaging (IM) application designed for mobile devices. This software is compatible with widely used mobile platforms like Android and iOS. Chat history data is stored by the WhatsApp software in these CRYPT files, which are encrypted SQLite database files with the .crypt extension.

Depending on the version of WhatsApp on your mobile device, these files may have the extension .crypt, .crypt2, .crypt3, .crypt4, .crypt5, .crypt6, .crypt7 and so on.

These CRYPT files are designed to be opened using the messaging and chat history viewer of WhatsApp.
