How to open CRD files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CRD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CRD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While HTC Device Firmware Mod Enabler is a popular type of CRD-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .CRD file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

PPC Organiser Card

PPC Organiser Card files are a component of the PPC Organiser application supplied with the Amstrad PPC portable personal computers, serving as a digital address-card or contact record format. The PPC Organiser was written by Clasma Software Ltd and bundled with the PPC512 and PPC640 models, where it provided a "cardfile and address index" utility among other memory-resident tools.

The format is used by PPC Organiser to store individual contact or reference cards (entries) containing indexed fields such as name, address, telephone number and possibly notes. Files in the format are created by the PPC Organiser program under MS-DOS on the PPC machines. Users could view, edit, search and sort cards by their field values via the organiser's card-index functionality.

Internally, these files can be identified by a distinctive ASCII header near the very start: the signature "Clasma-ALaCarte-Ver.1" at offset zero appears in genuine files. Additional markers such as "SortNext", "SortPrev", "SelNext", "SelPrev", "Index" occur at fixed offsets, and a repeating pattern "nS…nS" appears at offset 86, all serving as internal keywords for sorting, selection and indexing of the cards.

Windows Cardfile Database

Windows Cardfile Database is a legacy database format from Microsoft's Cardfile accessory software. Cardfile was included in Windows from the very first version (1985) through Windows 3.x and bundled with later versions until Windows 95. Users made simple records like names, addresses, phone/fax numbers, email addresses, notes, and occasionally embedded graphics, storing them card by card, much like index cards.

This format is created by CARDFILE.EXE. Each database is a single file containing a collection of cards; each card has a short title ("index line") and a free-form content area. Text data is recorded in the system's ANSI code page (or double-byte character sets in certain localized versions). Some cards in later versions may include OLE 1.0 embedded objects or pasted bitmap images.

The file begins with a signature identifying the version: "MGC" marks the original Windows 3.x ANSI format; "RRG" indicates the variant that supports double-byte character sets. In Unicode-capable versions (for example under Windows NT), signature "DKO" is used and characters are stored as 16-bit Unicode. Internally, there are fixed-size index entries, then variable-length card content blocks. Embedded objects are stored using the OLE storage format.
