What are COUNTRY files and how to open them

What is a COUNTRY file?

A .COUNTRY file is an AmiAtlas Country Data file.

AmiAtlas Country Data files store the map data for a single country used by the AmiATLAS mapping and route-planning program on the Amiga platform. They define the geographic boundaries, internal regions, towns, road networks, and other map elements of a country so the main application can display and allow navigation, searching, and route calculation within that country's area.

These files are produced and updated by the AmiATLAS development team or user map contributors. The software reads them when the user selects a country map to view or route through. AmiATLAS can combine country files of neighboring countries (concatenate maps) so the user can travel across borders seamlessly. Users install these files into the "maps" directories of AmiATLAS and load them via the program's country-map selector.

Files begin with a fixed ASCII signature "AMIGA_ATLAS_COUNTRY" at the very start of the file (offset 0).

How to open COUNTRY files

Important: Different programs may use files with the COUNTRY file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your COUNTRY file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
