Important: Different programs may use files with the CNF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CNF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested seven different CNF openers which you will find listed below.

While CA-Simply Money Configuration is a popular type of CNF-file, we know of 7 different uses of the .CNF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Invision Configuration

PlayStation 2 System Configuration File

PlayStation 2 System Configuration files are simple text-based settings files used by the console to tell it what to load when a game disc or homebrew disk starts, which video mode to use, and what version the game is. These files are produced by either official PS2 game disc-builders or by hobbyist tools when making discs or images for the PS2.

Their main purpose is to tell the PS2 which program file on the disk to execute (an ELF or KELF executable), to indicate the version of the title, and to set the video output mode (NTSC or PAL). Each line in the file is a key-value pair, such as BOOT2 (path to the executable), VER (version number), and VMODE, so that when the disc is inserted, the PS2 firmware reads this file and launches the game or application correctly with the right settings.

A typical file begins with a BOOT2 entry giving a drive-device and path (for example cdrom0:\SCPS_110.04;1), followed by a VER entry like "1.00", and a VMODE entry such as "NTSC" or "PAL". The file is all ASCII text, with keys and values separated by = and usually one setting per line.

Some files begin with the string "BOOT2=cdrom0:\" at offset 0, and they contain the keyword VMODE elsewhere in the text. Those byte signatures help identify genuine PS2 system configuration files.

Telnet Configuration File

Files that contain the .cnf file extension are most commonly associated with telnet connection files. These CNF files store the information that the computer uses in order to make a telnet connection.

Files with the .cnf extension may contain the name of the telnet server that is being used as well as the username and the password of the telnet user. The CNF file that is used by the telnet client software works like a shortcut, allowing users quick access to commonly-used telnet sessions.

Varsity Scripsit Configuration File

We know that one CNF format is Varsity Scripsit Configuration File. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
