Did your computer fail to open a CM file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .CM files.
What is a CM file?
A .CM file is a Brief Compiled Macro file. These CM files contain compiled macros for use in the Brief text editor for Windows and OS/2. Macros help speed up repetitive tasks by executing a range of commands, being triggered by a menu selection or a hotkey combination. Brief was popular in the 1980s and 1990s and ended up being sold to Borland, who has since stopped selling the editor. We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
What else are .CM files used for?
While Brief Compiled Macro is a popular type of CM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .CM extension.
The CM file extension indicates to your device which app can open the file. However, different apps may use the same file extension for different types of data. So a CM opener may not be able to open all kinds of CM files. In this case, look through both formats to make sure you find the best suited CM viewer.
Through our analysis of CM files, we know that one use of the format is CustomMade module. We have not yet described in detail what these files contain and what they are used for, but our team is working tiredlessly through thousands of file formats. We'd love hearing from you if you have information about the format.
