CLPI File
What are CLPI files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a CLPI file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CLPI files.
What is a CLPI file?
A .CLPI file is a Blu-ray Clip AV Stream file.
Blu-ray Clip AV Stream files are a component of the Blu-ray disc structure, meant to store audio‐visual data for playback. These are MPEG-2 transport streams created by the Blu-ray Disc standard, placed in the BDMV/STREAM folder on the disc. They hold the actual video, audio, subtitles, graphic streams, or interactive graphic streams that make up the media content. Each Clip AV Stream is paired with metadata (in a matching Clip Information file) that describes how the clip behaves during playback.
The Clip Information file for each stream sits in the BDMV/CLIPINF folder and shares the same five-digit base name (for example, 00001.m2ts paired with 00001.clpi). That paired metadata provides details such as stream attributes (video codec, audio channels, subtitles), timing data used for seeking and synchronization, and chapter or characteristic point information that helps players access points efficiently. These files are essential for proper navigation, trick play, seamless playback, and menus.
Every Clip AV Stream file is read by Blu-ray players or playback software that supports the Blu-ray disc format. They interpret both the stream file itself and the associated metadata file to present video correctly. Playback makes use of the transport stream multiplexing, program clock reference timing, PID (Package IDentifier) fields for distinguishing streams, and random access index entries stored in the Clip Information file.
A technical identifier appears at the start of related Clip Information files: byte sequence "HDMV0200" at offset zero marks the format as defined in the Blu-ray AV specification. Another "HDMV" tag appears within the file at offset 191. These signatures distinguish these metadata files from unrelated file types.
