What are CLKX files and how to open them

What is a CLKX file?

A .CLKX file is a Crick Software Clicker file.

Crick Software Clicker grid set files store bespoke activity grids used in the Clicker literacy software. A grid set is an interactive layout of named cells which may include words, pictures, sounds or prompts, designed to support reading, writing, sentence-building or classification tasks. Users such as teachers build these grids using templates and then save them so that students can practise with the resources.

These files are created by the Clicker program from Crick Software when using File → Save Grid Set. They can also serve as templates. Once stored, a grid set can be opened and edited later within Clicker, allowing modification of items like cell content, layout, and associated media. Grid sets are reusable educational resources for multiple learners.

Internally a grid set file is structured using XML, beginning with an XML declaration and a root element in the namespace of the Crick schema. It contains metadata fields such as TARGETAPPNAME, AUTHORAPPNAME, CRICKINFO, DATECREATED, DATEMODIFIED and configuration flags like SPEAKSENTENCE, SHOWTEXTURE, BACKGROUND PATTERN. Cell definitions carry attributes for things like PICDATA, FONT FAMILY, LANGUAGE ID, VOICE ID.

Important: Different programs may use files with the CLKX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CLKX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
