What is a CIV5SLN file?

A .CIV5SLN file is a Visual Studio Civilization 5 Solution file.

Visual Studio Civilization 5 Solution files are text documents used by the Civilization V modding tool ModBuddy. They describe how a mod project is organized into one or more component projects, how those projects are built, and which configurations (such as build, deploy, or package) are available. These files help ModBuddy (which uses a Visual Studio - based IDE) know what to compile, package, or include for a Civilization V mod.

The solution file is created when a mod project is set up in Civilization V's ModBuddy SDK. Mod authors will edit the code, assets, XML and other resources in project folders; the solution file ties all of those .proj‐style subprojects together. The solution is read each time ModBuddy (or the Visual Studio shell environment it uses) loads the mod, builds it, or deploys it. ModBuddy writes changes into the solution file when project settings or configuration platforms are modified.

The format follows Visual Studio's classic solution (SLN) file syntax but is specialized for Civilization V's modding environment using ModBuddy. It contains lines like "Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 11.00" and "ModBuddy Solution File, Format Version 11.00," followed by PROJECT entries referencing .CIV5PROJ project files, and GlobalSections for SolutionConfigurationPlatforms, ProjectConfigurationPlatforms, SolutionProperties, and configuration‐specific fields like ActiveCfg, Build.0, Deploy Only, Package Only, etc. The file often includes GUIDs such as {F5FC21B5-7CC2-458A-ABBA-992F515BBA20} and keywords like GLOBALSECTION, ENDGLOBALSECTION, HidesolutionNode.
