What are CIV5PROJ files and how to open them

What is a CIV5PROJ file?

A .CIV5PROJ file is a Civilization 5 Project file.

Civilization V Project files store the setup and configuration for a mod project created with the Civilization V SDK tool ModBuddy. They are XML-based project definition files that tell ModBuddy how a mod is built - what it includes, how it is packaged, what compatibility and metadata it has - and are used during development, not by the game itself.

These files are written and maintained by ModBuddy as part of creating custom content for Civilization V. Modders edit them via ModBuddy (or optionally a text editor) when designing new mods. Once the project is configured, ModBuddy uses the information in these project files to build a distributable mod package (often with a .civ5mod file) that the game can load. Without this project file, ModBuddy cannot assemble the mod properly.

The format begins with an XML declaration including version and encoding (for example version="1.0" and encoding="utf-8"), indicating it is text/XML. Internal tags and attributes include items like ProjectGUID, AssemblyName, OutputPath, ItemGroup, PropertyGroup Condition, Import statements referencing Civ5Mod.targets, configuration metadata such as SupportsSinglePlayer, SupportsMultiplayer, SupportsMac, Stability, ModVersion, and author or developer information. These keywords help ModBuddy identify project settings, dependencies, build targets and export behavior.
