What are CFF files and how to open them

Important: Different programs may use files with the CFF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CFF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While BoomTracker 4.0 module is a popular type of CFF-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .CFF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Compact Font Format

Compact Font Format files store a modern font outline and related data in a very space-efficient form. These files represent one or more PostScript Type 1 or CID-keyed fonts using a binary layout that avoids verbose ASCII commands and shares common data among fonts. The design is especially useful for embedding in PDFs, for PostScript printing, or as part of OpenType font tables, reducing storage and transmission size without sacrificing outline quality.

Creation of these files is done by font design tools or conversion utilities (for example Adobe's font production system) that encode outlines and font metadata into the Compact Font Format. After creation the files are consumed by rendering engines, operating system font services, PDF generators, and printers, which read the binary data - glyph outlines (using Type 2 charstrings), font metrics, naming and hinting instructions - to render text accurately on screen or paper. OpenType fonts may embed a CFF font as a "CFF" table (or "CFF2" in newer versions) to package PostScript-style outlines within a broader font framework.

Raw Compact Font Format files begin with identifiable header bytes: a FontSet or font header whose first bytes are 0x01 00 04 at offset 0, followed by bytes 0x00 01 01 01 at offset 4. These signatures help programs distinguish Compact Font Format from other font formats.
