What are CEDF files and how to open them

What is a CEDF file?

A .CEDF file is an Ultra TC Editors Data file.

Ultra TC Editors Data File files serve as configuration-data databases for the Configuration Editor component of the Ultra TC Editors suite, which extends the Total Commander file manager with tools to manage menus, hotkeys, extended commands, button bars, start programs and internal settings. Ultra TC Editors generates and updates these files in order to present friendly names, categories and descriptions of configuration keys used by Total Commander. When Configuration Editor is launched, it loads a data file so that each INI-file setting key (from files like wincmd.ini or wcx_ftp.ini) can be shown with its proper name, description and suggestions. Users also contribute and translate these data files (for example, English.cedf, Russian.cedf) to reflect version-wise changes in Total Commander; updating these files allows the Configuration Editor to stay synchronized with newer settings.

Each of these data files is structured as XML and begins with the standard XML header. They include a top-level tag identifying the file type as ULTRA_TC_EDITORS_DATA_FILE, contain sections labeled MAIN_CATEGORY, CONFIGURATION, and DESCRIPTION, and list individual setting keys grouped under SECTION elements. Each key has attributes such as NAME, SHOW, FILE, and others. This internal structure supports defining which INI file the key belongs to (e.g. Wincmd.ini), what category or category-title it appears under, and how or whether it should be shown by Configuration Editor. The presence of tags like NAME and SECTION and strings such as TOTAL COMMANDER and WINCMD.INI helps in identifying the file as an Ultra TC Editors Data File.

How to open CEDF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CEDF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CEDF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
