What are CE2 files and how to open them

What is a CE2 file?

A .CE2 file is a ComputerEyes Raw Data Format Bitmap file.

ComputerEyes Raw Data Format Bitmap files store medium-resolution color images captured by the ComputerEyes system - a video frame capture device for Atari computers. They retain minimally processed image data, making them suitable for converting or post-processing rather than viewing directly. These files are generated by the CE.PRG program that comes with ComputerEyes hardware.

Within this format the image is stored all at once in color, using a combined RGB word per pixel. The width is 640 pixels and height is 200 pixels. Each pixel is represented by a 16-bit word in which bits 0-4 carry blue, bits 5-9 green, and bits 10-14 red; bit 15 is unused. The image data are arranged "vertically" so that the first word corresponds to pixel at coordinate (0,0), the second to (0,1), etc., column by column.

At the start of a file there is a 10-byte header. It begins with a 4-byte signature "EYES" (ASCII 45h 59h 45h 53h), followed by a 2-byte resolution field where 1 indicates medium resolution, and then four 2-byte fields for adjustments: brightness, contrast, red adjust, green adjust and blue adjust values, all in range 0-191.

How to open CE2 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CE2 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CE2 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
