CE1 File

What are CE1 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CE1 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CE1 files.

What is a CE1 file?

A .CE1 file is a ComputerEyes Raw Data Format Bitmap file.

ComputerEyes Raw Data Format Bitmap is an image format used by the Atari-ST graphics system called ComputerEyes. It stores unprocessed raster image data captured by the ComputerEyes hardware and preserved in its rawest form so that full control over colour, contrast and brightness remains until post-processing.

Files in this format are created by the CE.PRG program that accompanies the ComputerEyes hardware. The image data begins with a small header measuring 10 bytes, followed by pixel data arranged in one of three resolutions: low (320×200), medium, or high. In low resolution, the data consists of three separate colour planes - red, green and blue - each supplying one byte per pixel; only the lower six bits of each byte carry valid colour information. Medium resolution uses words (2 bytes) per pixel, each encoding all three colour channels in bit fields; high resolution again uses single bytes but encodes combined RGB values. Images are scanned vertically rather than the more common horizontal scanline order.

Every file starts with the ASCII signature "EYES" stored as the 4-byte long integer 0x45594553. That is followed by a 2-byte word indicating the resolution type (0 for low, 1 for medium, 2 for high), then multiple 2-byte words for brightness, contrast and individual red, green and blue adjusts. In low-resolution mode the file total size is 192 022 bytes including header, with three 64 000-byte colour planes for red, green and blue.

How to open CE1 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CE1 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CE1 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
