CCVF File

What are CCVF files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CCVF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CCVF files.

What is a CCVF file?

A .CCVF file is a CompuColor Virtual Floppy Disk Image file.

CompuColor Virtual Floppy Disk Image files store a complete image of a Compucolor II floppy disk so that it can be read or run in software, such as a browser-based emulator, instead of loading it from physical media. These images represent all the sectors, tracks, directory and file system information exactly as the original disk would have held, allowing programs, data, and the boot/auto-run routines to behave the same as on real hardware.

These images are written and used by the Compucolor II emulator provided via compucolor.org, which treats them as virtual disks (CD0, CD1) that one can insert into the emulated floppy drives. The emulator can load an image, read its volume label, display its directory, and allow running programs stored therein. The virtual floppy image format is also used for archiving and transferring disk contents, and some images are used to re-create real disks.

The Compucolor II hardware uses a disk system with 40 active tracks, 10 sectors per track, each sector holding 128 bytes of data, for a total capacity of about 51,200 bytes per disk. The file system (FCS) views the disk as 400 sectors, with sector 0 reserved for directory entries and volume label, and features such as file versions, file types, size, and start/load addresses.

The image files begin with a unique ASCII signature identifying them as Compucolor virtual floppy disk images: at offset zero the bytes read "Compucolor Virtual Floppy Disk Image\r\nLabel ". This header marks the images clearly and aids tools and emulator software in recognizing the format.
