What are CBDS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a CBDS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CBDS files.
What is a CBDS file?
A .CBDS file is a Comic Book DS file.
Comic Book DS is a file format used by the homebrew program ComicBookDS for the Nintendo DS handheld. It stores comic books (including manga), image-based documents and related metadata in a package specially arranged for fast display on the DS screens. Comics are first converted from standard formats (such as ZIP, RAR, CBZ, CBR, PDF, or folders of images) into this format by companion tools such as PictoDS, so that they can be loaded as a single file and navigated on the DS.
The format is written by PictoDS (or its derivatives) and read/rendered by ComicBookDS on the DS device. During conversion, full-color images are resampled, arranged, and often split or resized to suit the dual screens and limited memory of the Nintendo DS. Navigation options and layout modes (e.g. manga style, thumbnails, library) are built into the reader. Themes, icons, credits, configuration data, image sequences, and page order are managed by the format.
Internally, the file is a ZIP archive renamed with the .cbds extension. It contains image files (commonly JPG or PNG), text or XML-style configuration files to manage pages and layout, thumbnail images, metadata (title, author, credits, etc.), theme folders, and screen-specific image slices. Byte signatures include the ASCII "PK" ZIP header at offset 0, strings such as "COMICBOOKDS_BOOK.INIPK", ".JPGPK", "THMB_N", "THMB_R", "SMALL_N", "SMALL_R", "IMAGE", "JFIF", "NAME" and "CREDITS" that help identify the contents.
