What are CAMPROJ files and how to open them

What is a CAMPROJ file?

A .CAMPROJ file is a Camtasia Studio Project file.

Camtasia Studio Project files hold all the information needed to continue editing a video presentation after work has been paused. The project is saved by Camtasia Studio, a video-editing and screen-recording application by TechSmith, for making tutorials, demonstrations or other instructional media. It includes references to captured recordings, imported media (audio, video, images), timeline edits, visual effects, transitions, and project settings such as resolution and dimensions. Before exporting to a final video file, the project keeps everything organized so editing can resume or collaborators can work on the same project.

These files are created when starting new projects or after recording when choosing to edit immediately. They store only the metadata - paths to media files, editing decisions, track arrangements - not the actual video or audio content itself. Users must export or "produce" the project using Camtasia Studio to render a video file format such as MP4, AVI or other supported formats. Older Windows versions of Camtasia (through about 2019) use this project format, which was replaced in newer versions by an updated project file format (.tscproj). Projects can also be zipped for easier sharing, containing all referenced media.

The files are stored as XML text documents beginning with the standard XML header line at the very start of the file, followed by a <Project_Data Version tag. They also commonly include XML elements or keywords such as FILENAME, SETTINGS, MEDIA, TRACK, WIDTH, HEIGHT, FRAME, ZOOM, OBJECT among others, to specify layout, timing, effects and media layout.
