What is a CAFF file?

A .CAFF file is a Core Audio File Format file.

Core Audio File Format (extension .caff) is Apple's flexible container format used for storing digital audio along with metadata, markers, channel layout information, and annotations. It is part of Apple's Core Audio framework and was created to overcome limitations of older audio formats by allowing unrestricted file size, support for many audio formats inside one container, and rich metadata. Typical uses include high-resolution audio recording, editing, audio loops and effects in digital audio workstations, and storing audio with detailed metadata.

This format is generated by audio software and systems on Apple platforms that use the Core Audio APIs, including Logic Pro, GarageBand, Soundtrack Pro, and iOS/macOS systems that handle recorded or processed audio. A .caff file is read by audio playback, editing, and conversion tools that support the CAF specification. Internally it includes an Audio Description section describing the sample rate, channels, bit depth or format (compressed or uncompressed), followed by an Audio Data section carrying the actual audio samples or compressed packets. It may also include optional chunks for things like packet tables (for variable-bit-rate data), channel layouts, markers, instrument info, or unique material identifiers.

Files begin with a header identifying the file type with the value "caff," followed by a version number (1 in current spec) and flags; each data block ("chunk") in the file has a chunk header giving its type - described by four ASCII characters - and its size.
