C4D File
What are C4D files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a C4D file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your C4D files.
What is a C4D file?
C4D files have multiple uses, and CINEMA 4D Model is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
CINEMA 4D Model
CINEMA 4D Model files store 3D scenes created in the CINEMA 4D application by Maxon. They hold all the information needed to build a complete scene, including geometry (meshes, splines), objects, lights, cameras, materials, texture references, animation data, layout settings, render parameters and other scene components. The format is used when saving or sharing complete 3D projects to preserve all creative elements in one encapsulated file.
CINEMA 4D itself writes the files via its Save or Save Project commands. Projects saved this way are later reopened by the same application using Open Project or Add Project. CINEMA 4D can also export individual scene components, like selected objects or assets, to other formats for workflow exchange, but those exports do not produce this native model format.
The format uses an internal chunked structure based on the IFF (Interchange File Format) architecture. One version uses a header starting with the ASCII tag FORM followed by "MC4D" to identify the file as this specific CINEMA 4D format. Chunks with identifiers like PLTF (platform info), MAT4 (materials), OBJ5 (objects), UMG4 (editors view/camera), etc., follow; each chunk begins with its size so that parsers can skip unknown chunks. For this format, a characteristic signature is the byte sequence "C4DC4D6" at offset 1 in the file.
How to open C4D files
Important: Different programs may use files with the C4D file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your C4D file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different C4D openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .C4D
While CINEMA 4D Model is a popular type of C4D-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .C4D file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Maxon Cinema 4D Scene
Maxon Cinema 4D Scene files are the native file format used by Maxon's Cinema 4D application for storing complete 3D scenes. These files hold all elements needed to represent a virtual scene in Cinema 4D: geometry, object hierarchies, lighting, cameras, materials and texture references, animation data for position, rotation and scale, procedural objects, and scene settings. They serve as a full snapshot of a project in progress or completed work, allowing users to return to editing, rendering, or exporting their scenes.
Cinema 4D writes Scene files when the user saves a project via its File → Save Project command. The scene file by itself does not embed external assets like image textures, sound clips, caches or external databases. To bundle the scene alongside its required external components - ensuring portability - Cinema 4D offers a "Save Project Including Assets" command which gathers used assets into folders associated with the scene. Scene files also support use of multiple Takes (alternative versions of shots) and can save marked Takes together with their assets.
Cinema 4D Scene files allow complex scenes with multiple object types. Supported contents include meshes and mathematical (parametric) objects, scene hierarchy including groupings and transformations, lights, cameras, material definitions (both procedural and image-based), animations, normals, and procedural and generator-based geometry. Things like skeletal animation and NURBS have had varying levels of support depending on feature set or version. Scene files preserve project-wide settings such as measurement units: by default distances are stored relative to scene units, which are set to centimeters unless changed.
Files begin with a standard IFF (Interchange File Format) - style header. The first 12 bytes include ASCII signature "FORM", a long integer (file size), then identifier "MC4D", marking the Cinema 4D Scene format.
Various apps that use files with this extension
These apps are known to open certain types of C4D files. Remember, different programs may use C4D files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
