What are BX files and how to open them

What is a BX file?

A .BX file is a BX Embrilliance Font file.

BX Embrilliance Font files are installer packages used by the Embrilliance Platform to add new keyboard-typable embroidery alphabets, design libraries, or other content. They allow the user to install collections such as mapped letter-design sets so that lettering can be typed directly, rather than placing individual embroidery designs by hand. These installers are exclusive to software in the Embrilliance family.

These files are produced and published by Embrilliance tools - users or commercial digitizers package their alphabet designs, spacing/kerning data, baseline alignment, and any extra elements into the installer so that when installed, the font or library appears in the Embrilliance "Lettering" tools or Library dialogs. The platform's Express version allows use of BX installers for typing letters, while fuller versions (Essentials, StitchArtist etc.) support more advanced features like resizing, re-stitching, envelope shaping, or converting generated letters to editable objects.

They are not stitch files themselves, but wrappers/containers that instruct Embrilliance to install components (fonts, motifs, thread palettes etc.). Contents can include mapped designs for each glyph, default spacing, or extra design-elements ("moddies"). Once installed, they are loaded automatically by the software when needed.

These files begin with an ASCII header "BX001IDMDTL" at offset zero, which can used to identify them.

How to open BX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different BX openers which you will find listed below.
